Hakama
   Hakama is the divided skirt usually worn by aikido practitioners starting from sho dan (1st dan). Tradition wants the lower ranks to fold it up for them.
   Here is how to do it in only 12 movements.


   Grab the hakama at the belt, open it and fold the hip towards the right, so lay it down with the back up

1  Hakama back
  • smooth down the folds and the hips so that they are straight and parallel
2  Hakama front
  • flip it over so that the front comes up. Make sure to keep the folds at the end of the legs.
  • smooth down the folds starting from the center
3  Hakama side folds
  • fold the side's parts exceeding the belt size towards the middle
4  Hakama one third fold
  • fold the legs one third of the length
5  Hakama folded
  • finish up with another fold (one third of the length)
6  Hakama turned
  • turn it of about 90°
  • straight the ribbons
7  Hakama long ribbons fold
  • fold half of the long ribbons
  • fold them again in the same way
8  Hakama ribbons arrangement
  • arrange the folded ribbons in diagonal
9 Hakama knot with short ribbon
  • pass the left short ribbon where the long ones cross, then...
10  Hakama knot - following
  • ... pass it on the side
11  Hakama knot - end
  • fold it and lay it on the opposite side
  • repeat the knot with the right ribbon
12 Hakama completely folded
  • Let the second short ribbon slip under the first ribbon's knot and... That's all
